This standard specifies two methods of determining the thickness of plastic films and sheeting (in the following, collectively termed "films", for short). Method P, or the point scanning method, is intended for flat, non-embossed films and makes it possible to detect variations in thickness over the width and, in special cases, over the length of a test specimen taken from a film web or strip, or from a test piece. This method may also be used to provide input for other tests, for example tensile tests or the determination of electrical properties, in which case the test specimens are those specified for the relevant tests.

Method F, or the flat-tip scanning method, takes no account of variations in thickness and can also be used for embossed films.
