В зависимости от характера и происхождения пробы происходит расчет на основе определения сухого остатка (процесс A) или содержания воды (процесс B). Она считается для проб с сухим остатком или содержанием воды больше чем 1% (массовое участие).
Процесс A применим на тине, обработанный биоотброс, землю и твердые отбросы. Процесс B применим на жидкие отбросы и на пробах, которые содержат летучие материалы, за исключением воды вероятно или по достоверным источникам.
