SPECIFICATIONS AND LABORATORY TESTS FOR AVIATION FUEL FILTER MONITORS WITH ABSORBENT TYPE ELEMENTS - Per SDO No Longer Available for Sale * Fourth Edition
N API/IP SPEC 1583 ADD
Annotation
This publication covers the recommended minimum laboratory performance and general mechanical specifications for new filter monitor equipment and the recommended laboratory testing and qualification procedures. The tests specified in this document are intended to provide a standard method of evaluating new filter monitor designs in a laboratory environment. It is not intended to necessarily predict the actual performance of the equipment in every environment that it may be exposed.
This publication refers specifically to elements of 50 mm (2 inch) and 150 mm (6 inch) nominal diameters.
The specification does not address:
(1) Material requirements for the filter monitor element.
(2) Maintenance or service life issues.
(3) Trigger type monitor elements.
The specification does not cover the operation and performance of this type of equipment in fuels containing Fuel System Icing Inhibitor (FSII). This fuel additive is unique and makes unusually difficult demands on filtration and water separation/removal devices. Operators using such additives in aviation fuels are recommended to ensure for themselves the performance capabilities of filtration equipment by contacting the filter manufacturer for such information.
The performance of filter monitor elements in absorbing water may be affected by environmental parameters such as the salinity of the free water and fuel/water temperature and the type of absorbing material that is utilized. These issues are beyond the scope of this document and should be addressed by the manufacturer and the user.
