Annotation

This standard is to be regarded as a guide for

• decision-makers (managing directors and heads of production, IT, materials management, quality, maintenance, human resources and controlling),

• process owners and users (operations planning, logistics, order control, production planning, production, quality assurance, maintenance, and so on),

• those involved in the selection and implementation process with their particular technical specialities (project managers, as well as internal and external service providers), and

• vendors of software, hardware, and integration solutions

and offers a task-oriented description of MES and their potential uses.It reflects the existing concepts of MESA1), complements and updates them and provides a view which conveys the concerns of European finished goods manufacturers better.

At the forefront of this standard is a presentation of the tasks and benefits of MES. On-going standardisation and definition projects running in parallel (such as NAMUR NA 94, ANSI/ISA 95, IEC 62264, ISO 22400-2, VDMA 66412-1 to -4) give a detailed treatment of implementation-related aspects of MES.
