Purpose. This standard covers supplier requirements for engine accessory drive belt tensioners with the equivalent of two (2) arms and one (1) spring between them. The pulleys apply load on opposite sides of the Motor Generator Unit (MGU) or alternator.

Applicability. These tensioners are usually used for Belt Alternator Starter (BAS) applications, but not with using two (2) tensioners of the hydraulic damped type and/or the conventional rotary mechanical type. The differences in configuration of these designs drive different failure modes and features and, therefore, different validation testing. They merit a specific specification.

Remarks. This standard covers only specific types of tensioner configurations. There are three (3) other accessory drive belt tensioner specifications that cover linear, GMW16326; and conventional rotary mechanical tensioners, GMW16244; as well as BAS belt tensioners, GMW16327.
