Maximum immission values - Maximum cadmium intake values for the protection of livestock
N VDI 2310 BLATT 28
Annotation
The maximum concentrations for cadmium which will be presented below are intended to protect livestock. Such limits are usually derived from long-term experiments studying dose-response relationships in these animals. Cadmium limits can be set only for those species for which such studies have been performed. Cadmium poses a health hazard particularly to those livestock species which are outdoors part of the year or throughout the year. Herbivores, such as ruminants and horses, are more affected than chickens and pigs. Trade in fodder contaminated with cadmium may pose a hazard to livestock outside polluted areas.
According to present knowledge the cadmium concentrations mentioned in the following do not impair the health or performance of livestock nor do they cause a risky contamination of food so that health hazards after consumption of this food by humans need not to be feared.
Combined effects of cadmium with other heavy metals or other air pollutants will be ignored because of a lack of knowledge. The presented maximum values are based on the conditions of livestock rearing that are typical for the various species. A deficiency in minerals, trace elements, vitamins, and other essential fodder components may enhance the sensitivity to cadmium. This is also true for the general state of health of the animals.
